x,+98 pages with folding map, plates (3 folding), figures, drawings and appendix. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ibero-Americana: 26. First edition. This is a report on the archaeology of the Autlan area, which lies on the western fringe of the high plateau in the Southwestern part of Jalisco. The geographic setting of the area is briefly described, the early Spanish documents are utilized to furnish a background of the land utilization at contact times and to furnish some picture of the distribution of settlements. The use of the Spanish documentary sources has greatly enriched this study. Considerable effort is made to link the settlements mentioned in the sixteenth century documents with the archaeological and still occupied sites. Archaeologically, three ceramic complexes can be isolated: Mylpa, Autlan and Cofradia. Kelly postulates that the Mylpa and Autlan complexes date from the time of the conquest and that the Cofradia complex is earlier. Condition: Previous owners' names on front wrapper. Edge wear, corners bumped else a very good copy.
