Houston: Lee Otis Johnson Defense Committee, 1969. Three-page, 8.5x11 inch mimeographed press release; red pencil notes on cover sheet say "Negro" and "Lee Otis Johnson (SNCC)." Also included is a sticker calling for his freedom. Johnson was arrested by an undercover agent who claimed that the SNCC organizer had sold him a marijuana joint. He received a three-decade sentence, which critics called an obvious effort to silence him for his activism. After four years he was released on the grounds that he should have been granted a change of venue.
