Remarkably clean and tight in contemporary vellum binding, contents evenly toned. Paginated 1-320, and 371-425 pp, yet contents are consecutively numbered from p.320 to 371 and appear complete. SCARCE, especially so in such lovely condition. . First German Edition. Vellum. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

1552 Medieval LAW Gratianus Decretum Catholic Canon Corpus Juris + Mouchy Gloss
Gratianus, more commonly referred to as the 'Decretum Gratiani' was a 12th-century monk of whom nothing is known other than his work 'Decretum' (hence the moniker). This work is a collection of decrees on Canon Law which became part of the Corpus Juris Canonici. Gratian's work was known to heavily influence the writings of Peter Lombard along with notable anthologies and legal glossaries written in the 14th-16th-centuries. According to Thomas Woods, this work
"served as a model for 12th-century jurists in the formation of western law, based on rational rules and evidence to replace barbaric laws."
Antoine de Mouchy, a 16th-century French scholar, published an important commentary on Gratian. This 1552 de Mouchy edition of Gratian is exceedingly rare. According to the USTC, this book appears in only one institutional holding worldwide!

Quarto (25x16cm) original blind-stamped vellum with central embossed image of Christ surrounded by female images titled SPES, spine on 4 cords (spine splitting but well held by cords, vellum very darkened). Title page with ownership inscription (? Daniel Bower) dated 1698, [664] leaves ([par]8 A-FFff8 4G4 HHhh-NNnn8 OOoo4), last page blank. Marginal numbers, not column numeration, are probably references to the unabridged Stephanus Thesaurus. *Abridged edition of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae, compiled by Johann Scapula. The printer Guillaume Laimarie was active in Geneva 1578-1598.

Venice: al segno della speranza, 1547. Hardcover. Good. Quarto (150x110mm) original limp vellum covers with vellum ties. Cover loose, some wear on inside of cover page. Part of title-page missing. Some worming to endpages and back cover sligtly stained. Overall text in good condition, highly readable. Some minor folding to bottom corners, little impact on text. *First published in Florence during the supremacy of Savanarola in 1497.

Folio flexible vellum with stubs of ties (some wrinkles /paper spine label & large old shelfmark B) Titlepage +[25pp]=dedication, indices, to reader & errata. +[1p]blank +5-704pp As listed on a4 the book collates !6 #4 a6 b4 c-z6 +A-Z6 +Aa-Mm6 +Nn7 (lacks Nn8=the final blank) Title has stamp of the library of P.P.Capuci & early "sum ex libris Leodegarj a Meggen Can. Beron." Another "Capucinorum in Sursee" also "loci Capu. in Schyfen". Three small pin sized worm holes to TP soon diminishing to one and then none after the first few pages of text. There are two corners torn away without loss, 4 marginal tears (only one into text and that without loss).
