Hardback. Good. Printed for T Longman in Pater-Noster-Row, [London], 1762, first edition (but see later); 8vo, pp xx, 371 plus page of list of books printed for Thomas Longman; contemporary calf, both boards detached and the one mismatched in design with the other, spine good but with some small loss head and foot so a copy in need of binding repair; bottom corner of front free end paper missing but the book block complete, firm and with good margins although with a little light dust soiling here and there, particularly on the title page where exposed at the foot. Although this is indeed a first edition under this particular title the work was earlier printed 1750 as "The Reflector Representing Human Affairs As They Are and May Be Improved ... " Other than for the title and, hence, title page, this Longman reprint appears to be identical to the earlier edition right down to the list of books at the end. Boston: I. Thomas (Isaiah Thomas) and E. T. Andrews, 1792. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. 12mo. 216 pages. Hardcover bound in original paper-covered wooden boards. The binding is very worn, and the spine has perished, exposing the gatherings and stitching. The wooden boards are chipped, especially at the fore edges and along the bottom of the front cover. Much of the paper on the rear board is peeled or chipped off. The binding is still holding. Untrimmed. Complete with the copperplate engraved frontis and the footnote at page 77. Some foxing to the text. The title page and frontis are especially foxed and soiled. Early signature at the top edge of the front flyleaf appears to read "N. Description:
1797 RARE & Important Judaica Livorno Italy Jewish Sefer Mikdash Hebrew PrayerA rare, 18th-century Jewish prayer book entitled 'Sefer Avodat Mikdash'. This book, published in Livorno, Italy in 1797, was a study into the behaviors expected in a Jewish synagogue and temple – or simply a Jewish guide to sanctuary. Notably, Livorno became a hub for Jewish immigrants in the 17th-century and their presence only grew throughout the Medici rulership. Curiously though, it wasn't until 1780, when Livorno government reorganized, that Jews were declared eligible for various positions in the general court. Because of this rise in status, Jewish books became more prominent – including this 1797 published work.Item number: #10774Price: $750Traditional Mikdashספר עבודת מקדש - קול תפלה קול תחנה… [Sefer Avodat Mikdash][Livorno, Italy: 5557 (or 1797)].Details: • Collation: Complete• Language: Hebrew• Binding: Leather; secure• Size: ~6in X 4in (16cm x 10cm)• Very rareOur… Read More

SADE, Donatien-Alphonse-François, marquis de (1740-1814)
Autograph letter signed "de Sade" to his aunt Gabrielle-Eléonore de Sade
N.p, 22nd April [1790], 3 pp. in-8vo
Long and powerful letter from the Marquis de Sade, just after his release from the hospice of Charenton. He shouts with rage the injustice done to him by his in-laws, these "monsters", and mourns the loss of his precious manuscripts – including The 120 Days of Sodom – during the storming of the Bastille the previous year.
"My room was searched and I lost everything... precious works, the fruit of fifteen years' work, I have saved nothing... and all this through the fault of those wretched rascals whom I hope God will one day avenge me"

" Je manquerais au plus cher et au plus sacré de mes devoirs, ma chère tante, si je ne vous informais pas que je viens d'obtenir enfin ma liberté ; il ne manquerait à mon bonheur que la satisfaction de pouvoir vous embrasser tout de suite et j'y volerai sans doute, si des affaires majeures ne… Read More

The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.
Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
