Attractive copy of St.Leger's increasingly uncommon final novel, the last before his untimely death at the age of thirty following an epileptic seizure.

Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. Ives, designed, and printed by Bruce Rogers. Aldus praised the original edition for its adaptation of the roman type in its use of the French language. His discussion of the formation of roman capitals by geometric means led to many advances in design in early printing. His models for the capitals, set within a modular grid, displayed an approach to their construction that was unique to Tory, and his commentary critiqued the parallel efforts of the early letterform theorists. Bound in 1/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards, spine lettering gilt, spine somewhat darkened, in near fine dust jacket showing minor wear to spine ends, housed within publisher's slipcase showing wear to edges. The text of each page was printed within a decorative double-line square border – a printing style not common amongst American documents. This edition was one of the final issues of the Constitution to not include the 13th-Amendment on slavery.
