Cloth gilt, VG+. xii+418pp, Ex Library [ Adult School , Whitby ] head of the spine a triffle worn, otherwise a nice copy in the original blind stamped cloth. Martiall, an English Catholic exile had written his 'Treatise On The Cross' in 1564 in which he defended the Catholic reverence for the Cross. The book was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I who still had a Cross in her Royal Chapel. Calfhill, a Calvinist, wrote this work [ originally published in 1566 ] as an attack on Martiall & the Catholic position regarding the Imagery of the Cross & its importance.
