Talisman Literary Research, Georgetown, CA, 1971. US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, FINE/FINE- CONDITION ( very small closed tear in dj edge), 6 x 9, xvi, 521 pages. We understand only 500 were printed. -------------------------------This is the first comprehensive, annotated bibliography of California fiction — novels, novellas, and short stories that have a California setting. It is not a bibliography of California authors, but rather a bibliography of fiction where the locale or setting is California, in whole or part. The bibliography includes some 2,500 entries, covering many important phases of the California experience: the gold rush, the 19th and 20th century land booms, development of agriculture and rural life, the literary image of Hollywood, Utopian colonies, the oil and lumber industries, aviation, economics and politics, juvenile delinquency, race relations, water problems and water development, Bohemian life of the 19th and 20th centuries, Beadle and Adams Dime novels, westerns, mystery and detective fiction, science-fiction, adventure novels, romance, and virtually all aspects of human experience reflected in fiction. The bibliography lists works by obscure writers, obscurely published, as well as the serious fiction of Frank Norris, Gertrude Atherton, Jack London, Bret Harte, Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Wallace Stegner, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Jack Kerouac, Kenneth Millar, Jessamyn West, and many others. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Most of the entries are annotated and describe the plot or theme of the novel, and the place or setting. One or more book review citations is given, and other bibliographical references are cited. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by author entry. A place and subject index is also included. This bibliography is published in an edition limited to 500 copies. This project is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D. C., a Federal agency created by Act of Congress in 1965. Sample pages of the bibliography will be found included in this circular. A selection of facsimile title-pages is also included in the text.
