New York: David McKay, 1919. A fine copy of the first edition in scarce dust wrapper with some soiling and wear. All of the first issue points except gilt titles on the cover. All other points match Nudelman A53. The pictorial pastedown on the front cover is most often found with scratches and other problems. This copy is exceptionally nice.

Newcastle: Emerson Charnely, and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820 A good copy of the large paper 1st edition in contemporary half leather binding. This edition was printed on thicker high quality paper. With frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick, 4 portraits of Bewick by different engravers, and numerous engravings to illustrate the Fables. Contents: frontispiece; title page with small ink signature to top dated 1824; advertisement; Memoir; Catalogue; portraits; table of contents; select fables - pp1-332. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands to the spine and marbled boards. Page edges lightly marbled. The binding has wear to corners and the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good clean condition. There are some faded areas to the foredge marbling. The original endpapers are present. The preliminaries and the frontispiece are very spotty, and the frontispiece has a small repaired section in the gutter. LONDON : Hodder & Stoughton, 1908 A very good copy of the 1st trade edition with 40 tipped in colour plates by Edmund Dulac. In original green decorative cloth binding with gilt design on front board and spine. The binding is clean with bright gilt to the front board and spine. It has been professionally rebacked so is sound and tight. There is slight marking at the bottom edge of the front board and some very slightly paler areas on the back board. Corners with light wear. The original green endpapers are present with an inscription dated Xmas 1908 to the fep. There is some light foxing to the half title. Contents in very good condition being very clean with some light toning to page edges. The plate at p11 has a small corner crease and the tissue guard to the plate at p126 is creased.

Illustrated with both color as well as black & white photos, this book contains articles by 51 different authors. A few pages contain minimal highlighting, else the book is in very good condition. John Major, London.,1824. SECOND MAJOR EDITION. Illustrated with 14 copper engraved plates and several woodcuts throughout the text. Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

Each plate with the title printed below the border. 95 line illustrations throughout, some full page. Previous owners neat name on front blank endpaper otherwise a fine copy in original burgundy cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to front board and spine. Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. Scarce in this condition.:

Text and images were printed using photopolymer plates and reduction linoleum blocks. Fonts are Optima Bold and Gill Sans Light. Handbound in quarter-cloth with cover paper of handmade walnut dyed flax. 3.5 x 3.5" illustration inset of quilted papers, which were designed with the artist's mother. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill.
