About This Item

London: Arms and Armour, 1996. 294 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On the 'Road to Infamy' could be found the very best of British colonial military and administrative talents - 'Bobs' Roberts - a hero of the Indian campaigns, Sir George White, the 'Blimp ' - like Redvers Henry Buller - a popular and highly regarded officer, Sir Charles Warren - one time Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, and others. It was not a road they enjoyed taking. The Natal campaign of the Second Boer War, and the names of Spioenkop, Colenso, Vaalkrantz and Ladysmith, would blight the reputations of these men and lead to their appearance at a Royal Commission of Enquiry in London in 1902/3 where they were asked why an apparently one-sided conflict could have cost so much in terms of men, money and material. This fresh investigative study of this enthralling passage of history sheds new light on the controversial strategies, directives, opinions and reports which permeated every element of the campaign and, as such, adds significantly to literature on the subject." A few pages with soft crease at top corner, slight cigarette odor, slight bump and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two corner with very small bump, small heavy bump at bottom corner of front board, light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge. Dust jacket light wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top edge, light rubbing.. First British Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good -/Very Good-.
