About This Item

[San Francisco]: Pacific Editions, 2009. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hobson, Charles. No. 5 of 39 copioes, folio size, 11 pp., signed by Roger Angell and Charles Hobson, with TLS. For those touched by a love of sailing and the sea, this work, masterfully blending Angell's essay with Hobson's design, personifies that love and makes it touchable.

The text is an essay by Roger Angell (b. 1920), award-winning writer of mainly sports literature (he has been referred to as the "Poet Laureate of baseball ") and a regular contributer to The New Yorker. Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, has incorporated into his design old maritime charts of Maine, overhead views of islands based on those provided by Google Earth, model sails and rigging, and a pastel of a baseball cap (the BoSox, of course) signed by him beneath.

Includes a TLS from Hobson to the original owner of the book loosely laid in, dated July 28, 2009, wherein he walks the recipient through the book pointing out salient features - for example, he writes "a chart is sewn into the following two pages to show the sites of Roger Angell's winter-night-thinking about rock-strewn waters near his home and the White Island adventure with a bottle of Scotch and a Sox game".

___DESCRIPTION: Accordion-style book encased in a hard binding, the final page only being tipped-in at its fore-edge to the rear board, title page has a small chart which can be unfolded, incorporated through the book are a jib, another chart, and model boat main and jib; type Times New Roman, printed letterpress, folio size (approximately 15" tall), eleven leaves (each printed only on one side) total with colophon on the last page, a limited edition of 39 copies this being no. 5, signed in pencil by both the author and book artist on the colophon page, Mr. Hobson also signed beneath the pastel of the Red Sox baseball cap. The TLS is nearly a full page, is on Charles Hobson's letterhead, is dated July 28, 2009, and is signed by him in black ink, simply "Charles". The work is encased in a slipcase covered in white sailcloth with navy blue paper labels on the front and spine.

___CONDITION: Fine - all pages crisp and clean, entire work as new; slipcase also fine; TLS is fine with a single original fold.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details.
