Text and illustrations are in very good condition. Elegant quarto set, vellum spines and handmade pattered paper boards. Corners are heavily worn. Vellum spines are evenly darkened, with titles obscured, by at head of volume one, and spine damage to head of volume 2. Else good. The typography and illustrations draw one through the otherwise occasionally daunting, encyclopedic text. Burton uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshalled into service of this goal.
