USA: Random House, 2001. 535pp, a kilo packed to post. American Patriots is one of the great untold stories in American history. There have been books on individual black soldiers, but this is the first to tell the full story of the black American military experience, starting with the Revolution and culminating with Desert Storm. The best histories are about more than facts and events they capture the spirit that drives men to better their lives and to demand of themselves the highest form of sacrifice. That spirit permeates Gail Buckleys dramatic, deeply moving, and inspiring book. Youll meet the men who fought in the decisive engagements of the Revolution, the legendary Buffalo soldiers, and the heroic black regiments of the Civil War. Youll meet some of Americas greatest patriots men who fought in the First and Second World Wars when their country denied them access to equipment and training, segregated the ranks, and did all it could to keep them off the battlefield. Youll meet the heroes of Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. And youll meet two families, the Lews and the Pierces, who have served in every American engagement since the Revolution. FDR used to say that Americanism was a matter of the mind and heart, not of race and ancestry. With photographs throughout and dozens of original interviews with veterans, American Patriots is a tribute to the black American men and women who fought and gave their lives in the service of that ideal.. New York: Random House, 2001. Reprint. Second printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xxiv, 534, [1] p. Illustrations. Notes. Index. DJ has slight wear and soiling, with small edge wear. Gail Lumet Buckley is the author of two books and a contributor to many periodicals. She is the daughter of Holly wood's first black star, Lena Home, and she was married to the famous director, Sidney Lumet. Buckley grew up in a privileged black middle class family that paved her entry into the elite society of the rich, famous, and politically connected. Despite the obvious benefits of such a lifestyle, including an Ivy League education and world travel, Buckley was not immune to racism in America. In 1959 Buckley graduated from Harvard and began working for Marie-Claire magazine in Paris. In 1986 Buckley published The Hornes: An American Family, in which she traced six generations of her family's history. She also came across a photograph of her great uncle who had served in World War I. This inspired her to…
