William Wood & Company. 1885. early printing. Very Good; Hardcover; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 593 pages, bound in burnt orange cloth with gilt lettering, rules and botanical design. Line drawings. Beautifully bound cover very clean; gilt brilliant. Firmly bound with a bit of bumping to corner tips. Light dust soil on edges of text block. Endpapers heavily foxed. Internals show a few spots of finger soil, over all quite clean. Previous owner's name written a top of front endpaper. Packaged with care and shipped in a box. .

In original pebbled green cloth with pictorial vignette to cover and titles to spine in gilt. Binding somewhat shaken; hinges weak with endpages split in the gutters, now reinforced with archival japanese paper. Light fray to cloth at spine ends; gilt at spine a bit dulled. Light to moderate general toning to page stock, illustrated with woodcuts throughout. Prior ownership penned at front. Good only .

Hedrick-Woodburn: History of Horticulture in America p.489: "From the time of its first printing in 1846 down to 1900, the fruit book in America most used by fruit growers, nurserymen and later in colleges and schools was John Jacobs Thomas' The American Fruit Culturist." The first edition was a slim paper-covered volume with 30 woodcuts which became a popular and useful guide. It was subsequently expanded and is one of those books that got better over time.
