About This Item

New York: The Dial Press, 1965. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. From an auction of modern first editions that included a Norman Mailer lot--with the auction tag laid into the book--a fine copy in a near fine unclipped dustjacket. This copy is signed by the author on the half title page--signature only. A tight and clean copy with only the owner name in ink on the front free endpaper--a little toning to the page edges. The dustjacket is remarkably well preserved --bright with no fading to the spine as is often seen with this title. Some shallow edgewear to the head and heel of the spine--otherwise would be fine. Tight spine and hinges--a nice collectible copy.

Synopsis

An American Dream is Norman Mailer's fourth novel, published by Dial Press. Mailer wrote it in serialized form for Esquire, consciously attempting to resurrect the methodology used by Charles Dickens and other earlier novelists, with Mailer writing each chapter against monthly deadlines. The book is written in a poetic style heavy with metaphor that creates unique and hypnotizing narrative and dialogue.
