An American ABC by Petersham, Maud and Miska - 1941

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1941. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Maud and Miska Petersham. First edition, September 1941. Beautifully illustrated child's ABC book written and illustrated by the very prolific husband and wife team, Maud and Miska Petersham. The Petershams won the Caldecott Honor medal for this book and five years later they also won the Caldecott Medal for The Rooster Crows. Presented generally as a page of text for the letter opposite an illustration of the letter subject, e.g. Y for Yankee Doodle, Q for Quaker. All letters used. Colour lithograph illustrations, generally all in a red, black and blue palette on the white background paper. Some very dramatic illustrations and of course very patriotic. This copy signed by both Maud and Miska. c.26x21 cm. unpaginated. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt titling to upper board and spine and with red endpapers. Dustjacket not price clipped and with orginal bookseller stamp. Some loss to top of dj front flap and minor chipping to dj edges. Stain to top front of dj [see photo] and smaller stain to dj rear. Very minor rubbing to book corners and top/tail of spine. Five creases along length of ffep and a c. 1inch closed tear. Otherwise book would be fine.
