About This Item
Cologne: Frans Hogenberg, 1588. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. 15" x 20". Shows some wear at edges and along original fold line. In very good condition.

Beautiful panorama and plan of the city. Algiers is the capital city of Algeria, on the country's Mediterranean coast. It's known for the whitewashed buildings of the Kasbah, a medina with steep winding streets. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a Catholic cleric who edited the "Civitates orbis terrarum," a collection of 546 prospects, bird's-eye views and maps of international cities. Frans Hogenberg created the tables for the first 4 volumes. Together, these two geographers created a work that set new standard for cartography for the next century.
