AJANTA FRESCOES, being reproductions in colour and monochrome of frescoes in some of the caves at Ajanta after copies taken in the years 1909-1911 -- FIRST EDITION

by Lady Herringham

Condition: Very Good/No Jacket

London: Humphrey Milford (Oxford University Press), 1915. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. FIRST PRINTING of the RARE First Edition -- "limited to 600 copies, of which 350 only are for sale". Ex-library book bound in sturdy brown buckram with gilt lettering spine, pages and plates not trimmed, library bookplate on front pastedown, library perforated blindstamp on title page, no library marks or stamps on any plates, no writing or underlining, complete with all pages and plates, no foxing, solid binding. Some diffuse grubbiness on title page and in margins of a couple other pages (not heavy or obstructing). I am not certain, but I suspect this book was issued originally with all pages & plates loose. Each page in this example has been meticulously hinged such that all pages/plates open easily without bending or stressing the page paper. This is a very large book that weighs almost 7 pounds and measures 18.5 inches tall x 15.8 inches (470mm tall x 402mm). The book has 28 pages of introductory text, 15 full page plates in color, 27 full page plates in monochrome, and 1 collotype plate. Generally nice condition. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
