Rust colored wrappers with black lettering and color picture of a Pende (Zaire) Mask. This catalog is dedicated to the private collectors of traditional African sculpture, which is produced and used almost exclusively for purposes of religious and social ceremony. This exhibition, the tenth organized by the Museum of African art brings together 100 private and public collections in the Washington metropolitan area. Representing some 90 different traditional styles from 20 countries of present-day Africa, the exhibition includes more than 400 items of sculpture, crafts and textiles. This art is recognized by contemporary art historians and connoisseurs as representing one of the great creative heritages of mankind.
