Octavo, 317pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. From a limited edition of 520 copies, as stated on limitation page. Complete with frontispiece fold-out map and five additional illustrations. From the collection of C.G. Littell, with note on front endpaper stating that "my original Zenas Leonard sold for $789.00 at Parke Bernet, Feb. 5th, 1944." Some foxing to endpapers, occasionally in text. Text block stable. (Howes L264) (Currey & Kruska 235). This work was reprinted from the scarce 1839 account of Zenas Leonard's firsthand description of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Has small bookworm hole affecting the upper right corner of pages 23- 83, completely out of the way of any text and only about 1/2 inch in depth. Missing page corner as depicted, affecting the first front illustration page, affects a small amount of caption text, and the edges of 2 photos.
