Description:
1804 1st print Thornhill Shooting Directory HUNTING Color Illustrated Sport Guns

Richard Thornhill's 'Shooting Directory' is one of, if not the best early 19th-century shooting and hunting manual. This incredible folio hunting guide is a collection of discussions on hunting dogs, firearms and gunpowder, shooting styles, and of course descriptions of game animals. While hunting books have always been popular amongst sportsmen, this particular book is known to have more draw than most because of its exquisite full-page, color engravings!

This incredibly rare and valuable true first printing includes pages 214-220 which were suppressed from later editions. These pages highly criticized the hunting ability and shooting techniques of King George III. It is certainly because of these claims that, following the publication of this book, Thornhill moved from England to live full-time in Paris.

1591 Hanging of Martin Luther 1ed MALTA Inquisition Bozio Catholic Signis 2v

Tommaso Bosio (or Bozio) was an early 16th-century Italian Catholic inquisitor bishop known for his service in Malta. Little is known of his life outside of Malta, however, Bosio wrote a book entitled "De Signis ecclesiae dei', or 'Signs of the Church of God'. While at first glance, this book appears to be like many others of its kind – a description of the history of the catholic church, and it is. However, this book, unlike any other, contains a highly controversial tale on the life, rather, death of Martin Luther.

Bozio's "De Signis ecclesiae" is the first published account, whether accurate or not, to describe Martin Luther's suicide by hanging. According to Bozio, a servant of Luther found Luther hanged in a tree from a rope. Curiously, it is widely accepted that the cause of Luther's death remains a mystery, but some scholars believe suicide by hanging was the cause. Bozio's account is one of the first, if the… Read More

His studies in glass making prompted a treatise on the subject, a treatise which proved to be one of the best 17th-century works on glass making! "Ars Vitraria Experimentalis" includes countless recipes on making different types of glass with commentary on glazes, glass inventions, and glass furnaces.

1529 GREEK Theophrastus BOTANY Philosophy Metaphysics Causes of PLANTS Botanical

"Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend."
― Theophrastus

Theophrastus was a 4th-century BC Greek philosopher known for his studies in metaphysics and logic of Aristotle and Plato. One of his remaining works was 'On the Causes of Plants', an extensive botanical treatise. In fact, this work is considered to be one of the most important works of botany from the middle ages. Theophrastus describes plant growth, instruction on planting and harvesting, soils and fertilizers, farming tools, and the medicinal properties of many plants.

This 1529 edition of Theophrastus' 'Plants' was published in Lutetia, or Paris, by Christian Wechel.

1583 Famed BIBLE Art Emblems Claude Paradin INCREDIBLE Woodcuts Bernard Salomon

Claude Paradin was a 16th-century French heraldic and emblematic writer most known for his illustrated historical works. His most influential work was 'Devises Heroiques', an illustrated version of the Old Testament. Each episode is illustrated by a woodcut and is paired with a short French poem which mirrors similar emblem publications on the Bible that were published in Paris and Lyon in the 16th-century. This particular 1583 edition contains 247 engravings from Bernard Salomon, which is 16 more than previous editions (the book of Numbers has 11 new, and Joshua has 5).

An important, 16th-century medical treatise by Orazio Augenio! 'De Ratione Curandi' includes a wide variety of medical topics but most famously covers the use and benefits of bloodletting. 1688 AFRICA 1ed History EGYPT Mummies Pyramids Illustrated Tunisia MAPS LaCroix

Pherotee La Croix's "Universal Relation of Africa" is a famous 17th-century history of Africa. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history. However, much of La Croix's "Afrique" was heavily inspired by Dutch author Olfert Dapper's "Description of Africa".
Even still, La Croix's work is notable for the exquisite full-page and folding engravings as well as descriptions of some of the greatest mysteries of Africa including a section on Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and mummies! Other topics include voyages to the Barbary coast, Tunisia, Algiers, and Morocco.

Petrarch was a 14th-century Italian humanist known for his discovery of the letters of Cicero and establishment of the study of humanism. Description:
1583 1ed Pistorius Medieval German Chronicle Sigebertus FOLIOS Saxon Anglo-Saxon

Johann Pistorius was a 16th-century historian who published a number of anti-Protestant works each of which demonstrated his knowledge of his despised theological opponents such as Martin Luther. One of his rather unknown works was his collection of the works of medieval chroniclers including the works of Marianus Scotus, Sigebertus of Gembloux, Lambert of Hersfeld, Roberti de Monte (Torigni), and Hermannus Contractus of Reichenau all of whom were known to chronicle the history of Germany and Germanic tribes.
This enormous two-volume set of vellum-bound folios is a stunning display – truly remarkable!

Description:
1602 HERBAL Castore Durante Herbario Nuovo Plants Medicine Illustrated Mattioli

Castore Durante was a 16th-century Italian scholar who is best-remembered for his major work "Hebrario Nuovo". This work, which was first published in 1585, is a collection of descriptions of plants and their medical uses and healing properties. The plants detailed in this work were from Europe and the East and West Indies with information on how to identify them in their indigenous environment. According to Hunt,
"This was a popular Italian herbal that was reprinted in Italian, and translated and published in several other languages, for a number of years. The plant descriptions are written in the form of poems which Arber describes as 'pleasingly unscientific"

This highly coveted and desirable 1602 second edition is extremely valuable much in part to the hundreds of in-text woodcuts in the style of Mattioli.

Description:
First Edition. (1993) Hardcover with d.j. Fine with near fine dust jacket. D.J. has slight curl on top edge and light rubbing on back. No worn edges. Tight binding with clean, sharp pages. No markings. 305 pages. Dolores Claiborne is a psychological thriller novel. The novel is narrated by the title character. Atypically for a King novel, it has no chapters, double-spacing between paragraphs, or other section breaks; thus the text is a single continuous narrative which reads like the transcription of a spoken monologue. This book is dedicated to King's mother: "For my mother, Ruth Pillsbury King."

Description:
Collins White Circle Pocket Edition #228. Great 1940s cover! Colonel Anthony Gethryn must prove a man innocent of a murder he's been convicted for in only 5 days. MacDonald was a great practitioner of the mystery-suspense genre; his books remain readable, even if his characters are nowhere near as enlightened as we tend to be today. Please read this volume in its historical context. A very clean copy, spine slightly darkened with very faint reading crease: see photos.
