Original publisher's three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands, gilt compartments, marbled boards. An excellent copy with only light rubbing. A scarce book in this most expensive deluxe binding, of which just 500 copies of the first edition (30,000 copies total) were bound. Besides the three essential points of the first printing, the following textual points are also present: the title-page and page 283 are cancels; page 155 (last 5 is missing; first or second state). Page 155 occurs randomly in all three states within first printing sheets, a strong indication of the use of multiple plates in the production of this book, or mixed sheets. The frontispiece portrait is in the second state of three (not a point of priority as BAL points out, since it is an insert, printed separately from the sheets and added at the time of binding).
