London: Chatto & Windus 1884. 8vo (5 1/2 x 7 1/2"), red cloth stamped in black with gold lettering, xvi, 438p. plus publisher's device + 32p. catalogue dated May 1886, front hinge inconspicuously strengthened and paste-down worn where bookplate has been removed, 1 leaf opened poorly with part of blank margin torn, very narrow faint red color on bottom edge of some pages, spine ends frayed, rear cover some soil (really sounds worse than it is), clean and tight, VG. First English edition issued several days before the American edition. Gatherings sewn, not stapled (Blank assigns no priority), presumable third issue with catalogue dated May 1886 (first issue catalogue dated Oct. 1884, second dated April 1885, this third issue seems to be quite scarce). Illustrated by E.W. KEMBLE with frontispiece with tissue guard and 173 black and white drawings throughout the text. Peter Parley To Penrod p.75 for U.S. edition, BAL 3414.
