1751. LA FONTAINE, Pierre de. The Adventures of Capt. De la Fontaine, Late an Officer in the Service of the States-General. Containing a Series of Singular and Interesting Events, Political, Amorous, and Military, in France, Holland, Turky, the Dutch West-Indies, England, &c. Taken from His Manuscript, and Revised (at His Own Request) By a Gentleman. London: Printed for F. Stamper and E. Downham, 1751. 1st ed. [4],60pp. Bound in period-style calf-backed marbled boards. Faint scattered foxing, light uniform toning, else very good or better. ESTC T110637. Rare, Worldcat locates only two copies. La Fontaine fled France, served as a soldier of fortune, and was imprisoned In Newgate Prison for forgery. With the ownership signature of Archibald Kennedy either the 11th Earl of Cassilis or his father who had the same name. The elder Kennedy was married to the granddaughter of Jacob Leisler, governor of New York in the 1690s. The Kennedys lived in New York City until the younger Archibald returned to Scotland to take up his peerage.
