Very good. - Quarto [12-3/4 inches high by 10 inches wide], pictorial dark blue cloth titled in gilt within decorative frames in gilt on the front cover & spine with an image of a sailing ship stamped in gilt on the front cover & a coat of arms in gilt on the rear cover, in a dust wrapper. The dust jacket has a small tear at 1 corner. xii & 178 pages. Profuse illustrations, including 4 maps, 2 of them folding, & 20 plates, including a portrait frontispiece. Fine in a near fine dust wrapper. <p>First edition. The text is in Dutch.<p>Dutch admiral Michiel Adriaansz de Ruyter [1607-1676] distinguished himself under Tromp in the First Dutch-English War [1652-53]. He defeated the English fleet under Monck in the Four Days' Battle off Dunkirk [1666] during the Second Dutch-English War. During the Third Dutch-English War he commanded and won against the combined English and French fleets off Sol Republic [1672] and Ostend and Kijkduin [1671], preventing a sea invasion of the Dutch Republic. He fought against the French and Sicilians and in 1676 was mortally wounded in battle off the coast of Sicily.
