About This Item

Applause Theatre Books, New York, 1991. First American Paperback. Softcover (Stiff Boards). Good/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Photographic. (18), 3-106, (20) pages, the last 20 pages further books from publishing house, editor's note, protests by author, and biographical notes on the author. The text is illustrated numerous black-and-white photographs throughout. Black-and-white photograph on the front cover, showing author as Lord Foppington from the play "The Relapse", with red, white and blue titles to the front panel and backstrip. Creasing to the book corners and reading creases to the backstrip. Rubbing and other marks to the panels and the remains of the sticker can be seen to the lower left-hand corner of the rear panel. In this book the author looks at the Restoration period of drama, particularly its comedy. The Restoration period, after the dour reign of Cromwell, saw the reopening of English theatres and its raison d'être was "... buoyant, often bawdy romps" -- from the rear panel, and how to channel the spirit of the age and its wit into an actor's performance.
