About This Item

London: Bernard Lintott, 1704. Good. A Restoration era play quarto from a collection compiled by the financier and book collector, Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778-1859) and rebound by 'T Connolly' of Dublin. [14], pp58. Incomplete, half title lacking and final 2 leaves replaced by an 19th century pen facsimile. Bound in half vellum over attractive marbled boards with black Morocco label, last quarter of the 19th century, binder's ticket of 'T Connolly, 10 Up. Ormond Quay, Dublin'. In good condition, title and final page soiled, some watermarks throughout. There are several contemporary annotations including red pen marks to the margins; 'London Acts' added to head of p44; the first two lines of the ode on page 48 are written out along with a note in the margin; and in the Epistle Dedicatory "the Author of the Short View" is noted to be 'Jeremiah Collier'. Performance of this play was forbidden by the Lord Chamberlain. From an extensive Irish collection of quarto plays. Good 1704
