About This Item

New York: Gold Star Publications,, 1939. Octavo. Original blue morocco-grained cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt. With dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. An excellent copy in the very good dust jacket, a little rubbed and creased at the extremities. First edition, first printing. A guide to the history and functioning of Wall Street for investors without specialist knowledge, including a detailed glossary of financial terms and lists of contemporary stock exchange members. The book covers the general history of the exchange and features chapters on important corporate players like the "railroad giants" and "the House of Morgan", advice on selecting industries and companies in which to invest, and tips on analysing bonds, balance sheets, and corporate incomes. Black Tuesday, the Great Depression, and the resulting media coverage and legislation inform the tone of this volume, with chapters on the Security Exchange Act, the Blue Sky Laws, and the recent Richard Whitney scandal. A very attractive copy in the dust jacket which features a photograph of Wall Street.
