About This Item
e-booksonline, 2003. Paperback. Used: Acceptable. Paperback in good condition, in stock and ready to post. 2003 edition 1st e-booksonline. The 89th Minute is a supporter's history of Newcastle United from 1984 to 2000. Written as a diary, it details a young boy's first visit to the Gallowgate end to watch the final games of the 1983/4 season and the years of devotion that followed. Keegan's departure, Jack Charlton's arrival and fairly swift departure are documented as I travelled home and away watching The Mags. Willie McFaul's reign followed and a move to College in London lead to six years as a Geordie exile. Qualifying as a teacher provided me with the finances to wander the country as United first narrowly avoided relegation to the then 3rd Division under King Kev then won the First Division Championship the year after and promotion to the promised land of the Premiership. The ensuing years are covered as a series of diary entries in which I relate a sport that changed throughout the 80s and 90s. The changes in my own life are documented, including my eventual marriage to a Middlesbrough fan. This is the North-East's Fever Pitch and a tribute to all those fans who have travelled obscene distances, getting up at stupid times of day and night just to watch 90 minutes of football. - .
