I-LXXXIV and 4 Supplementary plates, engraved by H. W. Edwards from drawings by the author; pp. [xxvii], 20, [2 Index] plus (usually) two leaves of letterpress accompanying each plate; half-title present. Bound in later half speckled calf with marbled paper boards, very good with slight rubbing. Contents clean and tight, marbled end papers, no inscriptions, a little minor foxing, and very light offsetting to a few plates. A very nice copy. Provenance: purchased by the previous owner from Francis Edwards catalogue 1019, dated 1979, item no. 245. "Hooker spent twelve years at Halesworth, during which he produced his British Jungermanniae, with his own illustrations, widely considered to be his most beautiful work. With title page in red and black inks covering all 4 sections of the work. Sylva is the 3rd edition revised by Evelyn and with a new dedication to the King. It is the first edition to contain the poem 'The Garden' written by Abraham Cowley. With 2 page dedication to the King, 16 pp note to the Reader, 4 pp poems, 2pp 'Advertisement' - containing definitions, 'The Garden' with dedication 7pp and Table of Chapters - the index for the whole 4 books. Berlin: Paul Parey, 1892. Hardcover. Good +. iv, [2], 602, [6] p.: in-text drawings; 24 cm. Dark brown coth with gilt-stamped spine title; color orchid illustration on front board. All page edges marbled. Elaborately decorated endpapers with ownership space on front fixed endpaper filled in by W. Nahlop. This was most likely Wilhelm Nahlop, who was head gardener for over 25 years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries at the Schloss Britz, now in the Britz district of Berlin. Four unpaginated page of publisher's advertisements follow text. The author, Berthold Stein (1847-1899), was the inspector of the Breslau Botanic Garden. In Good+ Condition: edges rubbed; ends of spine fraying; cloth splitting over joints with tear across lower spine; foxing, heaviest on first and last leaves; soiling in margins of a few pages; otherwise clean and tight.
