London, 1868, 1870 and 1871. Quarto. Three of his articles are from The Lancet: "A Lecture on Lithonomy" (Vol. I no. 1) January 4, 1868; "Observations on Swallowing Indigestible Substances" (Vol. I, no, 11), March 12, 1870; and "The Hunterian Oration" Vol. I, no. 17); also two off-prints from the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, no. 137: "On Lithotrity" and "On Lithotrity, the Instruments Used". While lithotrity had been crudely but successfully performed at the end of the 18th Century, he successful operations led him to become surgeon both to the Prince Consort and the Queen. His expertise also led him to design new medical instruments both the bulldog forceps and the mouth gag for cleft palate. As the Dictionary of National Biography notes: "He operated at remarkable speed and in silence, himself applying every bandage and plaster, and leaving as far as possible, no traces of his operation.
