Caerlloen: I. Parry & I. Fletcher / Bala: Robert Saunderson / Dinrych: Thomas Gee, 1821-1825., 1821-1825.. Good. - Octavo, 7-1/8 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Bound in early home-made buff suede with a holograph title label mounted to the spine. The covers are rubbed, soiled and stained with a small chip to the tail of the spine. The volume is paginated thus: Book 1: [vi] & 438 pages; Book 2: [vi] & 104 pages; Book 3: 8 pages, including the title leaf. The title to the first book is darkened & stained with chipping to the edges. Some of the pages are darkened with occasional soiling and minor foxing to the edges of a few leaves. A couple of signatures are slightly pulled and there is slight wear to the edges and occasional creases to the corners of some of the pages. The edges of a couple of the last book's pages are stained with some creases and chips, though not affecting the text. Good.

From the library of Robert & Thomas Roberts with Robert Roberts' signature, followed by a brief annotation, penned at the top of the title to the first work and Thomas Robert's signature penned on the front pastedown. There are additional annotations penned by Robert on the rear endpaper, though with minor loss to a few words of his notes as the edges of that leaf are chipped with some loss. Thomas has additionally penned 5 lines in his hand on the rear pastedown.

The first work in this volume is a translation into Welsh of the classic work by Thomas Boston (1676-1732), "Human Nature in its Fourfold State". According to the "Catalogue of Printed Literature in the Welsh Department" by Ballinger and Jones (1898), "Though the name of John Parry appears as translator, it would appear that the translation was made by Evan Evans [Ieuan Glan Geirionydd]." Evans (1795-1855) was an important Welsh poet and a writer of hymns.

The second work in the volume is of great importance in the development of Welsh religious life. The title in English is "The History, Constitution, Rules of Discipline, and Confession of Faith of the Calvinistic Methodists in Wales Adopted at the Associations of Aberystwyth and Bala, in the Year 1823." The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists formed at 32/34 Great Darkgate Street in March 1823. The work at hand is the second edition of the book presenting the results of this important event.

The third work in this volume is the First Edition of a much admired Welsh poem by Thomas Jones (1756-1820), translated as: A Poem to the Song Thrush Composed January 1793. The 210 line poem is published on 6 pages plus a title leaf. Jones was a Calvinistic Methodist minister. In 1813 he published an important work on the history of martyrs. He printed many of his works on his own press at his home in Ruthin. In 1813 he sold his press to Thomas Gee the elder. This work is RARE. WorldCat locates only 2 copies.
