About This Item

3 Vols Set : 1) The Rich Jew Of Malta (Illus. Eric Ravilious), 2) The History Of Dr Faustus (Illus. Blair Hughes-Stanton), 3) Hero And Leander (Illus. Lettice Sandford): All 3 Volumes are the correct first issue printings published by the Golden Hours Press, London between 1932-33. All three books are in near Fine condition and are in their original bindings as issued. The Golden Hours Press was founded in 1932 by Christopher Sandford and Francis Newbury, but closed after one year when its proprietors took over the Golden Cockerel Press from Robert Gibbings. These three books were the only three books that The Golden Hours Press published. All three books are in their first issue elaborate morocco bindings and not to be confused with the more commoner second issue 'Hollis and Carter' rebinding of plain green buckram which occurred when an unspecified number of the remaining unbound copies of each title were taken over in 1933 by Hollis and Carter who chose to issue such copies in a cheaper binding. The latter copies are identified with an errata slip to the limitation page and the addition of the letter (a) to the copy number. Vol 1) 'The Rich Jew Of Malta' published in 1932. This is number '42' of 200 copies for sale. Slight offsetting from the morocco in-turns. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. Four full-page wood engravings by Eric Ravilious. Vol 2) 'History of Dr Faustus' published in 1932. This is number '13' of 200 copies for sale. A tiny rub to the lower front corner morocco. Slight offsetting from the morocco in-turns and some offsetting to the blank end-papers. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. Four full-page wood engravings and one half page by Blair Hughes-Stanton. Vol 3) 'Hero and Leander' published in 1933. This is number '37' of 200 copies for sale. A small amount of rubbing to the upper spine band. Slight offsetting from the morocco in-turns and some offsetting to the blank end-papers. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. A little light spotting to the page edges in places. Four full-page wood engravings and one half page by Lettice Sandford. All three books are protected in removable Mylar archival covers. A very handsome production and extremely scarce with their original first issue bindings. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
