Virtue & Co., London, 1872; Joseph Clayton Bentley steel engraving of a 17th century alchemist engaged at his mysterious craft, after the painting by notable Dutch Master, Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685), whose career was overshadowed by his contemporary Rembrandt, but who in 1661 was nevertheless accorded the highest honor by his peers: the presidency of the Haarlem Painters’ Guild. Ostade is credited with well over 400 paintings over his lifetime, and his genre pieces, as here, were often characterized by use of dramatic chiaroscuro. A plate from the Art Journal of 1872, most important Victorian art publication of its day. Printed on heavy paper, sheet size 9 1/4" x 12 3/4", image size 7" x 10". Fine condition, clean, crisp, and bright. A superb print of a legendary subject.
