Lost in the Funhouse The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman Unknown - 2000

by Bill Zehme

From the publisher

In the last original era of American comedy, the 1970s, a handful of young comedians looked away from the last vestiges of vaudeville to create a new form of the art. Using situations instead of bits and jokes, these young funnymen could elicit laughter in ways the entertainment industry had never imagined.

At the forefront of this movement was Andy Kaufman, and even in death he is still with us. Taxi is in reruns on Nickelodeon, director Milos Forman is putting the finishing touches on Man on the Moon, a film about Kaufman's life starring Jim Carrey, and A&E is planning a biography of Kaufman to air near the film's release.

Lost in the Funhouse, Bill Zehme's new work, is a probing look at the short life and untimely death of this comic genius. Written with the full cooperation of Kaufman's family, friends, and colleagues, this audiobook takes listeners on a ride never before experienced and not soon to be forgotten.

A complete original -- part performance artist and part prankster -- Kaufman lived his life as one relentless show, and he inspired, excited, and enraged viewers and colleagues alike. From his debut on Saturday Night Live, in which he lip-synched to a scratchy recording of the Mighty Mouse theme, to his mainstream breakthrough as the loveable Latka Gravas on the sitcom Taxi, Kaufman was always breaking new ground.

But there was a dark side to Kaufman as well: He wrestled women -- his record was 69-0; he staged a brawl with pro wrestler Jerry Lawler on Late Night with David Letterman; and he created an obscene alter-ego, Tony Clifton. It was this dark side that convinced people that Kaufman did not die of a rare form of lung cancer in 1984. Many felt it was justanother one of his practical jokes -- some still believe that he lives among us today.
