This story was first published in February 1951 in THE THE ILLUSTRATED MAN. However, the release of both was probably more or less simultaneous. Its first appearance in an anthology was in THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES 1952, edited by Martha Foley (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1952). Foley also collected this story in FIFTY BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES: 1915-1965 (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1965).
