First Edition Identification

The first edition of The Little Prince was published in New York in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock. The American edition preceded the French or English editions, making it the sole means of obtaining a signed copy of the book. A limited number of 525 signed copies were produced, bound in salmon cloth, and stamped in maroon.

Shortly after the book's publication, the author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a professional aviator, disappeared during a mission for the French Free Air Force over the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, this first edition became one of the most coveted limited editions and rarely surfaces in the marketplace.

Katherine Woods translated the book from French, and the author himself provided the illustrations. The original dust jacket bears the price of $2.00 and includes the publisher's address on Madison Avenue, New York, on the lower front flap.
