E.Con: How the Internet Undermines Democracy Paperback - 1999

by Donald Gutstein

From the publisher

At first, the Internet was an endless resource of free information. Now, the public information systems are being deregulated, commercialized, and privatized by the "barons of bandwidth." Disney Co., Time-Warner, and other companies and billionaires such as Rupert Murdoch and Bill Gates control enormous telecommunications empires, and their strategy is clear: build an infrastructure under private ownership and control; ensure that all applications operate under the intellectual property rights regime; and pressure the institutions to commercialize their programs.

Reducing the availability of information to only those with access to the Internet, and those who are able to pay the fees, means we all miss out.

As media analyst Donald Gutstein shows, democracy cannot survive without access to public information, yet this access is quickly diminishing. And though taxpayers' money is pouring into the government, only a trickle of public information will soon be available to us.
