Freud: Conflict and Culture Hardcover - 1998

by Michael S. Roth (Editor); Introduction by Michael S. Roth; Foreword by James H. Billington

From the publisher

The exhibition, which was orginally scheduled for the fall of 1996, was postponed amid a firestorm of controversy. It is now set to open in Washington, D.C., in October 1998 -- and to travel on to New York, Los Angeles, and Europe -- and promises to be one of the most engaging and provocative the Library has ever mounted.

Reflecting the lively and comprehensive spirit of the show, Freud: Conflict and Culture is a gathering of variously challenging, erudite, and amusing essays by scholars, critics, and writers. Among the contributors are Oliver Sacks, on Freud's neurological research, Peter Gay, on psychoanalysis and the historian, and Robert Coles, on psychoanalysis in America. John Forrester examines The Interpretation of Dreams, Art Spiegelman provides an irreverent and hilarious twist on the same, and Peter Kramer considers both the current status of Freudian theory and its possible future.

A fascinating spectrum of viewpoints on one of the most influential figures of the modern age.

Scattered underlining and markings by Connolly. <br> "William E. Connolly is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor in the political science department at Hopkins where he teaches political theory. His early book, The Terms of Political Discourse, was awarded the Benjamin Lippincott Award in 1999 as 'a work of exceptional quality that is still considered significant at least 15 years after publication.' In a poll of American political theorists published in PS in 2010, he was ranked the fourth most influential political theorist in America over the last twenty years, after Rawls, Habermas, and Foucault.
