Vintage and Pulp Paperbacks

Known for their sexy and outlandish cover art, pulp magazines and paperback books have quite the storied reputation and history. Originally named for the type of paper used in printing, pulp fiction has a large cult following that grew exponentially in the 1940's and 1950's. Pulp and other vintage fiction centered largely on sexualized, over the top exploits and crazy plot twists. There were a few highly popular genres featured in pulp literature, including horror, hard broiled detective mysteries, tales of deranged and misogynistic sadists, and even science fiction and fantasy. Pulp magazines featured ongoing, serialized stories, and pulp paperbacks were often serialized as well. Because of the cheap quality of the paper, pulp magazines and books were very inexpensive to purchase, often priced at 10 or 15 cents. With the rise of men's magazines in the 1950's, pulp literature began to wane, but with its zany and often offensive content, pulp certainly had a deep and interesting effect on American culture.

Description:
The first edition PAN X434 was published in the UK in 1965 with a cover by Raymond Hawkey and "Not for sale in the in the UK", 250,000 copies were printed in July 1965.
The second edition of PAN X434 were printed in 1966 and shipped with a movie tie-in cover replacing the Hawkey scorpion and pearl cover. PAN Books had remaining stock of the first printing of 1965 with the Hawkey cover and applied a wrap of the movie tie-in edition to the remaining 1965 copies.
There is no record as to how many of these variants were shipped by PAN, the majority of the authentic variants discovered over the years have been found in Australia.
This a good unread copy, has tanned pages and foxing. The foxing is on the inside of the cover and first page, first page has a vertical tanning section where the wrap faces, this tanning supports the authenticity of this being the actual book shipped with the wrapper and not swapped out for another copy, there is a remains clipping to the front cover. The back cover has foxing… Read More

Description:
Fresno, CA: National Library Books, 1964. RARE. Gay pulp fiction. Near Fine, spine lean, paper uniformly browning. NLB-100. Mass market paperback. "Lost on Twilight Road reflects on the early life of a boy whose primary aim was to live peacefully, disrupting nobody's chance of existence. But from the time that his mother sent a woman to their trailer to seduce him, he began to find that peaceful co-existence was a hard endeavor. His twilight path began shortly after Mildred had seduced him, the second seduction being by a boy near his own age. Having been jolted from his first foster home and called a "queer," he next lost another job because of his refusal to accept advances from a prominent business man. With any heart at all in your bosom, you can't help but feel a kindred sorrow for this boy, as well as some sort of a dislike for the people whose tolerance of the unfortunate goes no deeper than the first layer of skin on their bodies"--Back cover. .
