If You Give A Mouse A Cookie is the title of a 1985 book illustrated by Felicia Bond. It is the tenth book written by Laura Numeroff, and is generally considered her magnum opus. Its plot deals with a boy who gives a cookie to a mouse, who in turn asks for various other favors. At length this leads back around to the mouse wanting another cookie. The book features two characters, a mouse and a boy. Neither characters speaks, but their dialogue is reported indirectly by a narrator. The main character of this story, Mouse, appears in three others: If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, If You Take a Mouse to School, and The Best Mouse Cookie. The book was so popular that it inspired the If You Give A series, which includes If You Give A Pig A Pancake, If You Give A Moose A Muffin, and If You Give A Cat A Cupcake. The phrase is referenced in the movie Air Force One, as an allegory to the dangers of giving in to terrorism. It was spoofed in the show Robot Chicken. On Easter Sunday 2009, President Barack Obama and his family read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" to children participating in the White House Egg Roll.
