When did you get started in bookselling?

VJ Books started in 1998, and soon learned that our customer was foremost a collector. Our customers seek collector grade first edition books, preferably signed by the author. In an effort to respond to this demand, VJ Books has developed relationships with publishers, authors and their agents to provide a continuous supply of new titles for our customers. Each month our customers are able to choose from dozens of author signed books from some of the most exciting, highly acclaimed authors in the areas of mystery, suspense, sci-fi and modern literature. Additionally, we continue to offer an impressive selection of backlist, rare, out-of-print, and special edition titles for your consideration.

What drew you to bookselling?

John (the "J" of VJ Books) has always been a collector - stamps, art, wine and books. When "Corporate America" no longer its allure, Virginia suggested that "maybe we can just sell a book a day" and thus began the journey.

Did you have any mentors in becoming a bookseller?

N/A

What are your specialties as a dealer?

We specialize in signed and collectible mystery, science fiction, adventure and horror titles. Through our publishing imprint, Norwood Press, we produce limited edition books for author Clive Cussler and his co-authors.

What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?

We are very proud of the books produced by our imprint, Norwood Press - http://www.vjbooks.com/Norwood-Press-s/142.htm?searching=Y&sort=7&cat=142&show=300&page=1

What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?

I love that many of our customers and authors have become great friends!

Do you have an open storefront or have you in the past?

We are "never open" and "never closed" This model has required us to communicate at a deeper level with our authors and customers, but we've seemed to have figured out how to bring "high touch" and "high tech" together.

What is the funniest / strangest / scariest thing that ever happened in your store?

Lisa Gardner (Fear Nothing) and her mom stopped in for a book signing and it was great fun! Every time we meet up with her we make sure to bring the CHOCOLATE!

What is your favorite bookshop (other than your own)?

N/A

What do you personally like to read? Collect?

Over the years John has culled his private collection from 30 to 10 authors. Just as with most readers, I'm sure, he has found that those authors that are friendly and connect have continued to occupy a place on John's coveted TBR (to be read) list.

What's your favorite book you personally own? Would you sell it, if the price were right?

This is like asking me to tell you which of my children is my favorite!

What one book would you buy if price were no object?

N/A

If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring three books, what would they be?

N/A
