Description:
UK: Pocket Books, 1997. Soft cover. Very Good. 13 x 2.8 x 19.8 cm. NOTHING LIKE IT IN THE WORLD is the story of the men who built the transcontinental railroad - the investors who risked their businesses and money; the enlightened politicians who understood its importance; the engineers and surveyors who risked, and sometimes lost, their lives; and the Irish and Chinese immigrants, the defeated Confederate soldiers, and the other labourers who did the backbreaking and dangerous work on the tracks. The US government pitted two companies - the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads - against each other in a race for funding, encouraging speed over caution. Locomotives, rails and spikes were shipped from the East through Panama or around South America to the West, or lugged across the country to the Plains. In Ambrose's hands, this enterprise, with its huge expenditure of brainpower, muscle and sweat, comes vibrantly to life.

Description:
Kinloss, Scotland: Librario Publishing, 2005. Soft cover. Near Fine. 14 x 12.1 x 21 cm. Betty Willshers intricate dissection of her family history is a masterful account of eight generations of a Scottish family living ordinary but interesting lives. The Russell family was well known in the North East during the early eighteenth century and in following years it was to make a significant contribution to the county of Moray, especially it capital Elgin. There the Russells guided public affairs in the nineteenth century and reported the goings on in the local paper The Elgin Courant which Alexander built up to become and influential and, to this day, a prime source of local history. Through the author we learn a wealth of local Scottish history, which many major biographies pass by. From the age of the carriage to that of the computer her eye for historical perspective is equally acute.
