About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1866. Cloth. Very good +. 304 p. 20 cm. Engraved frontispiece by A. B. Houghton. Green cloth hardcover with blank impressing on boards and gold on spine. Bumped corners and softened spine ends. Bookplate on front pastedown.
Two Dickens books in one volume. Though Hard Times is a well known part of the author's repertoire, Pictures From Italy may be less so. A travelogue written in 1846, it describes Dickens' tour of Genoa, Rome, and Naples with his family two years previously. What interests Dickens most is the colourful street life; on pp. 273-274 he witnesses a public beheading in Rome.
