Book Description

Temples of Knowledge - Historical Libraries of the Western World

A limited edition art book with exquisite large  format
photography by Ahmet Ertug. Edition is limited to  400
and each copy is numbered and signed by the artist.

Foreword by Bruno Racine, President of the National
Library of France  Introduction by Robert S.Nelson,
professor of  History of Art, Yale University.

This book offers a visual journey into the ancient
libraries of Europe through the eyes of Ahmet Ertug.
Thirty unique and magnificent historical libraries are presented.

Historical essays tell the story of libraries in antiquity
and their development until the 19th century. Throughout
history libraries have been havens of peace and tranquility,
places where people come to read, research, or just
contemplate and find serenity of mind. In the pages of this
limited edition book, the libraries of the Western World have been
photographed and their history told in expertly written essays.

This limited edition book is created by master printers and
binders in Italy. The exquisite volume is limited to 400
hand-crafted, leather-bound volumes. Photographed with a
large format view camera on 20 x 25 cm film, the vision of
Ahmet Ertug takes the reader on a journey through the spaces
of these ancient libraries.

The book has 160 pages, 51 single page images, printed at
41 x 51cms; and 49 double page images, printed at 51 x 62
cms. All pages are hand attached to the spine of the
book, avoiding stitching through the images.

A separately bound text volume contains essays written by
experts and historical information  by professional librarians.
Historical essays  by Friedrich Krinzinger,
Thematic essay by Thierry Grillet.
