Book Description

London: Ernest Nister. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Pen and Ink Illustrations By E. Stuart Hardy. 1898 (dated from British Library). Contains 6 wonderful full page Victorian Chromolithographic pop-ups (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, There Was an Old Woman who lived in a shoe and Beauty and the Beast). In addition there are sepia line illustrations on all of the 21 pages of text. This book was printed in Bavaria, which was the centre of chromolithographic printing at this time and the quality of the chromolithographs belies this. All of the pop-ups are original and are in perfect working condition. Specific condition: Binding: The binding has been professionally re-strung and some of the page joins have been re-inforced with the original end papers, backstrip etc. all being retained. The corners are worn. Interior: Some of the pop up support tabs have been replaced and some of the figures have been re-inforced from behind. The corner of the floor to one of the scenes has been replaced and a tear to one of the text pages has been bonded (both done professionally). There is a crease to the edge of one of the scenes. There is a certain amount of soiling to some of the pages and the cover boards - this is commensurate with the age of the book. Overall this book is in very good condition. I have provided a scan of the cover (which is a composite of two parts, hence the apparent split down the image) but if you would like a view of one of the pop-ups please feel free to e-mail me as it really is the beautiful chromo pop ups that sell this book. Note: I have many other other pop-ups. Please browse my Pop-up / Panorama / Movable catalogue. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
