Bound: green cloth stamped in gold with author's name, title, and publisher on spine, facsimile of author's signature stamped on front panel, minor rubbing to tips and spine ends, ink stain at top of back panel about 3-1/4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, discoloring to top edge, still very good. Octavius Brooks Frothingham (1822-1895) was the first historian of Transcendentalism, organizer and first president of the Free Religious Association, an anti-slavery leader, associated with Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in advocating equal rights for women, as well as an early and ardent supporter of Darwin and Spencer, The recipient of this copy, Henry Wilder Foote, was (as Frothingham) a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and served as minister at King's Chapel in Boston. A nice association copy.
