Berkeley: University of California Press, 1968 Castaneda, Carlos. THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN. A Yaqui Way of Knowledge. Inscribed. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1968. True First Edition of the Author's first book. 8vo, (xii), 196pp. Publisher's medium gray cloth covered boards lettered in gold, green endpapers. Elegantly inscribed in blue fountain pen on the dedication page: "With all the best, Carlos Castaneda". True First edition of Castaneda's very scarce first book & the first book in the Don Juan series. Issued in a small edition [likely 750 - 1250 copies] by a university press, the book was well-read on campus & copies of this, the true 1st [not to be confused with the later Simon & Schuster, 1973 printing] are difficult to find in collectible condition. A seminal 60's book of some great counter-cultural significance through which Don Juan's perception & mastery of "nonordinary reality" opened up the mind of an era to the possibilities of a more mystical & magical existence, linking various themes of spirituality, drugs & metaphysics. A fine fresh exceptional example of this profoundly influential work, in an excellent dustwrapper - the nicest we have seen in years. A spectacular signed copy of this much sought after book in a fine custom fitted slipcase. $7500. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Description:
binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.Inv. # 63672 NOAB* bds 9/2023
