Taylor had presented this paper to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in January 1910 and had subsequently given interviews to several monthly magazines on the same subject. This volume was published in February 1911 in order to get the paper into the hands of the members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers before the information became more generally available when the articles were published.
