by Upton Sinclair

1906 first edition, first state including the Sustainer's Label. Unbroken type on copyright page. 413 pages plus advertising at the back.
For those not already familiar with the publishing history:
Sinclair's novel was first serialized in The Appeal to Reason, a Socialist newspaper. After being turned down by several publishing houses, Sinclair decided to self-publish the book, and accepted advance subscription orders from his readers in order to finance the book's publication (the people who bought advance copies are the "Sustainers").
While all this was going on, Doubleday agreed to publish the book. The book ended up being published simultaneously, by both Sinclair, and Doubleday, from the same plates. Sinclair's self published version carries the imprint "The Jungle Publishing Co." The Jungle Publishing version is considered the first state of the first edition. Supposedly, about 5,000 copies were printed under the Jungle imprint.
Condition of the book is Good. The binding is sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked. Condition issues include (see photos):
1) Moderate shelf wear to the boards
2) Fading to the spine lettering
3) Light soil to the endpapers
4) Occasional soil spots to inside pages
5) The hinge is cracked but firm in a couple locations, most noticeably at a back page in the advertising section

In sum, not a pristine copy, but one that is quite sound, eminently readable, and utilitarian. What more could a true Socialist book collector want?

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
