Reprint publication of two 1869 illustrated books about the inaugural ceremonies and picturesque scenes surrounding the Suez Canal: Inauguration du Canal de Suez: Voyages des Souverains, by G. [Gustave] Nicole and Voyage Pittoresque a Travers L'Isthme de Suez, by Marius Fontane. Both titles were illustrated by [Edouard] Riou and are reprinted and bound together here in one volume housed in a matching slipcase. Casebound. Green simulated leather binding with titles stamped in gilt on front boards and spine. Measures 33 x 35 cm. Text in French. The first title, Inauguration du Canal de Suez: Voyages des Souverains, [2], 40 pp. , [2], describes the visiting royals, engineers and other dignitaries (de Lesseps, the Khedive Isma'il of Egypt and Sudan, Empress Eugenie of France) who attended the official November 17, 1869 inaugural ceremonies. It describes and shows scenes of the parades on land and sea, balls, dinners, fireworks and other festivities, as well as portraits of the visitors and one longitudinal profile map of the Suez Isthmus and Canal. No original publisher noted. The illustrator, Edouard Riou provided 19 aquarelle illustrations, most in color. The second title, Voyage Pittoresque a Travers L'Isthme de Suez, [2], 45-170 pp. , was originally published by Paul Dupont and E. Lachaud in Paris. It describes the landscape along the Suez Canal illustrated with 25 of Riou's delicate aquarelle views of camels, canal workers, architecture and canal scenes, most in color. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine.
